Eccleston is a village with a rich history; It is believed that the name of the village derives from the Primitive Welsh eglẹ̄s (a church) and the Old English tÅ«n (a settlement, farmstead or estate) The village was mentioned as Eclestone in the Domesday Book of 1086 and was on a Roman road to Chester, the settlement consisted of seven households (four villagers, one smallholder and two others) on land under the ownership of Gilbert de Venables (‘Gilbert the hunter’)

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson’s Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Eccleston as a pretty place that borrows beauty from the Marquis of Westminster’s neighbouring seat of Eaton Hall, the manor belonged to the Marquis of Westminster.

Eccleston Hill commands a fine prospect and the parish is traversed by Watling Street.
